Guided Christian Meditation To Help You Draw Closer To God

By Pamela Harris

Learning to be still and quiet the mind is counter-intuitive in the busy world we live in. Crowded minds make it easy for attention to be distracted to the grocery shopping that needs to be done or the email that needs to be sent. Guided Christian meditation is the quickest way to clear the mind of cluttered thoughts, stay in the present moment and experience the presence of God.

Christians may have the mistaken view that meditating is a new age or anti-Christian practice that is not meant for believers. The Bible itself speaks often about meditating and these kinds of meditations are focused on the Word of God. Meditating can be seen as a tool that can be used in many different ways. Christians are able to use it to draw closer to God and experience His presence.

Being with God and abiding in His presence is central to these meditations. In the story of Mary and Martha in the Bible, Martha was busy cleaning and cooking and she became upset with Mary because she was just sitting at the feet of Jesus. Jesus commended Mary for her choice.

Many of these meditations are designed to accomplish a specific goal such as dealing with anxiety or finding healing for a physical illness. They are designed to offer prompts that help to focus the mind, create calm, or create the right atmosphere for healing.

More and more believers are becoming interested in learning to meditate. There are a variety of techniques and deciding on the most suitable can sometimes be a challenge. The best way for believers to make a choice is decide what they would like to accomplish. Do they want to learn to let go of mistakes, guilt, and negative thinking patterns that weigh them down? Do they have an illness and need healing? Are they suffering from anxiety and panic attacks?

Meditating allows believers to be still enough to hear God speaking. An intimacy with God is experienced as a result of being still and there is an openness to hear what He is saying. Abiding in Him and listening to Him creates more sensitivity to His Spirit.

Many physicians today recommend some form of meditation for health purposes. It can lower blood pressure and reduce pain. Many illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, depression, diabetes, eczema and psoriasis are aggravated by stress. When meditating, some of the physical benefits are due to the heart rate slowing down, blood pressure dropping, muscles relaxing and the immune system being strengthened.

Biblical meditations enable believers to enjoy the physical benefits but far more too. When it is used as a tool and coupled with faith, it can transform the lives of believers. As they learn to abide in the presence of God, they experience more clarity and more peace of mind. They develop more understanding for themselves and for others.
