Prophetic Ministries And Biblical Teachings

By Larry Cook

When it comes God and the church, there are a number of different churches and belief systems. One of these viewpoints is that of prophetic ministries. In most cases, churches involved in this type ministry are Charismatic in nature.

Individuals believing in prophetic churches and teachings often believe that the prophets and apostles have been reborn and are working in the church. Better known as fundamentalist or charismatic, there are also churches of this nature which identify as part of a five-fold ministry. As such, five-fold churches are now considered far more conservative than some had been in the past.

In the Bible, prophecy is often more populous in the Old Testament than the New Testament gospels. For, in the Old Testament God raises up prophets to encourage and rebuke Israel during times of rebellion or trouble. Whereas, Nathan, a prophet speaks to the word of God to King David with regard to sinning with Bathsheba.

In Biblical times, to be a prophet meant to be someone whom could speak to God, then relay information to the people. In most cases, prophets gave guidance, rebuked sin and evil and taught the word of God. After which, other prophets were brought up in the church after having learned and studied the ultimate message of God.

One New Testament belief by prophetic churches is that of prophets and prophecies. Rather than believing in fortune-telling, these prophecies are messages which relate to building up the church. Whether building up the church in knowledge or spirit, prophets are often at the helm. For, prophets often rebuke, guide and teach members with regards to the history, beliefs and all things associated with the church.

While this is the case, there are churches whom believe that prophetic ministry only relates to preaching the Bible. In most cases, those involved in this type ministry believe in the Bible in a literal sense. As such, it refers to those speaking the written Word and not the relaying of messages. Whereas, most often earthly prophecies such as those tied to Nostradamus and other great thinkers are often seen as hogwash or nonsense by the church.

Individuals involved in this ministry often believe that the New Testament was only compiled to prove the existence of the apostles. As such, much of the text related to Jesus is overlooked by the church. Whereas, the church still believes in both Old and New Testament teachings. One thing the church is clearly against is that adding-on to the Word of God. As such, the Bible is the only book used by churches of a prophetic ideology.

While following Christian beliefs, the church does not believe in individuals having the ability to transcend reality, talk to God and bring messages back down from heaven. As with all religions, it is important that an individual look at the foundation and history of the prophetic faith before deciding to come a member of an associated church and congregation.
