National NAACP Organization And NAACP Washington PA

By Jeffrey Murphy

There is a rather dark history in America when it comes to the African American community. Whereas, there are also some good things which came to pass, beginning with the creation of the National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People in 1901. For, it was at that time in which a group of people came together to create a bi-racial association now known as the NAACP, an association which now host central headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland and branches around the United States including, NAACP washington pa.

The overall mission of the association is to assure that all people, regardless of race, have the same rights when it comes to political, educational, social, economic and racial equality. While it is hoped that by focusing on the these issues, racism will be eliminated and equality will take place, it does not appear that will be the case anytime soon. Still, the association hopes that at some point in the future, racial in-equality will be eliminated and replaced with love for all people.

While the group expanded the mission in the 20th century by considering such issues as economic development, black foreign refugees, and police misconduct, the organization retained its original title in keeping with tradition. By including the once common term, colored people, the organization is referring to anyone with African ancestry and heritage. After all, the founding members indicated the association was a bi-racial endeavor.

The NAACP has six primary departments which include federal advocacy, education, economic opportunity, criminal justice, health and the department of environmental and climate justice. Each department within the organization serves a specific need in the community. As such, individuals in need of service can obtain professional focused attention on that particular area.

When it comes to African American youth, the NAACP is committed to creating happy, healthy and successful human beings. As a method of doing so, the association provides a competition with an Olympic style platform. The competition known as ACT-SO takes place over the course of a year and is intended to motivate, stimulate and reward African American high school students whom show cultural and academic achievement. For, the NAACP considers children of today, the adults of tomorrow.

There are 32 different categories in the competition which include the culinary arts, science, technology, math, humanities, business, performing and visual arts and video performance. To date, more than 300,000 have become involved in these competitions. Due to the success of the program, the association hopes to continue the program in the future for as long as funding remains available.

In addition to ACT-SO, while primarily focused on civil rights, the NAACP provides annual awards to African Americans in two different categories. These include, achievement in arts and entertainment and a Spingarn Medal which is awarded for outstanding achievement of any kind. As such, any African American of any age or gender can submit an achievement or list of achievements to the association in hopes of winning a medal.

The current focus of the association is on several attacks in the South, such as church burnings and racial rhetoric coming from different areas of the United States government. The association recognizes that fixing these issues will not be easy. For, the strong presence of White Supremacy which has taken place since the 2016 election has taken the African American community back in time when it comes to civil rights.
