Joshua The Odyssey Weaves Intrigue

By Lela Perkins

Every now and then, the literary world is graced with a work that makes the people stop and question what they thought they knew. Joshua The Odyssey Of A Man is just such a creation. This piece of historical fiction is a skillfully written account based on the speculative life of one of history's most famous personalities.

Dr. Theckedath Mathew, MD has produced one of the most talked about works of modern times. Though fully a work of fiction, the story is so well written that one almost forgets that they are not reading a factual biography. The author bases his main character on the life Jesus Christ, and focuses on those years in which he is conspicuously missing from the Bible.

Joshua, the main character, is a Jewish boy of thirteen years who lives in the land of Galilee and is based on Jesus Christ. Like the biblical prophet, he is different from the other children and has some unique qualities about him. The tale picks up after the Joshua is banished from the temple for contradicting the rabbi, and proceeds through the next eighteen years of his life.

In the Bible, there is no mention of Jesus from age thirteen to thirty-one and through the centuries, there has been much speculation as to what actually occurred during those missing eighteen years. So many questions revolve around what he did and where he traveled. There is no definitive proof but based on extensive research into various writings of that era, the author was able to come up with a plausible account.

The author took the time to study the people and the land as they were during that period of time in order to lend more authenticity to his account. Each character is carefully constructed to be believable and lifelike so that readers can relate to them on a personal level. The style of writing is so skillful that it is easy to forget that one is actually reading a fictional story.

This is a gripping tale that keeps the reader captivated from the opening paragraph through the closing sentence. The primary personality is one who is infinitely wise, generous and a staunch supporter of fair treatment for women. Just as Jesus was said to have done, he prevents a gang of self-righteous men from punishing a woman by stoning her to death.

He travels to many lands such as Egypt, Athens, Babylon and Rome spreading his words of wisdom, healing and teaching. He makes his way on through Mathura, Taxila and Israel interacting in the lives of people of all classes and bringing attention to the plight of the poor and needy. All accounts are historically accurate to the time period in which they are based.

Joshua The Odyssey Of A Man is a book that is well worth the read. It opens the mind to realistic possibilities and provides hours of interesting adventures and acts of humanity. The tale is so well written that both Christians and those of other beliefs will find it believable, mesmerizing, intriguing and hard to put down until the very last page has been completed.
