With Addictions Counselling Winnipeg Patients Can Take Control Of Their Lives Again

By Patty Goff

Dependency is one of the most widespread problems in both developed and under developed parts of the world. Millions of people are addicted to a wide variety of substances. Addicts are convinced that they need whatever it is that they depend upon. The substances that they use may help them cope, forget, get high or simply allow them to function from day to day. However, with expert addictions counselling Winnipeg families can find new hope.

A large number of people struggling with dependency issues will deny the fact that they are sufferers. This is especially the case with people that have become dependent upon ordinary substances that are freely available over the counter. People that use excessive amounts of aspirin, cough medicine and others convince themselves that they need it and that they are suffering from a condition such as chronic headaches that demand medication.

Many others are addicted to dangerous and even illegal substances. Drugs are available freely and alcohol is widely abused. People that become dependent on these substances often subside into dependency gradually. They tell themselves that they deserve a little bit of fun and that they can stop whenever they choose to do so. Of course, the only one that they are fooling is themselves.

People that have developed a dependency often do their loved ones great harm. Drug addicts and alcoholics will go to almost any length to obtain their fix. In the process they may steal, lie and even commit crimes. They do not think about the consequences of their actions and they often develop serous personality disorders. They cause grief and heartache for all those that love them and that depend upon them.

Families and loved ones of addicts need to understand that an enforced intervention will serve no purpose at all. They will simply antagonize the addict and strengthen his belief that his is judged unfairly. The most difficult part of the rehabilitation process is to reach the point where the addict himself freely admits his addiction and his need for professional counselling.

Many addicts secretly admit that they need help but they do not seek such help because they are afraid or ashamed. They think that they will destroy their careers or their relationships. In fact, the very opposite is true. Many employers will support employees strong enough and manful enough to admit to a problem and admitting the need for professional help. Families of addicts normally want to support them and help them wherever possible.

It is important to find a counselor that has extensive experience in dealing with addictions and dependency problems. It is also important to understand that the therapist will not be able to make any promises regarding the pace of progress. Progress depends solely upon the patient. Therapy often takes a long time and many patients will continue to see their counselors for years.

Dependency is a disease that affects not only the addict but also everybody around him. It can lead to socially unacceptable behavior and in many cases addicts develop serious personality disorders. Help is available, however, but only once the addict recognizes that he has a problem and that he cannot solve that problem alone.
