How Growing In Faith Can Be Different For Everyone

By Catherine Wagner

Everyone encounters phases in life feeling utterly dejected and hopeless. It is common to experience feelings like these, but it is tougher to unburden yourself from these feelings. Others often suggest that growing in faith should be the best method to get rid of these nagging feelings.

Obviously, this is an advice that is easier said than done. Nurturing faith may come easy for others, while some may find it impossible. Faith does not have to be a belief in any religious being. Even people who do not pray can lose faith. Faith in this context can simply mean hopefulness and optimism in life.

Not having a purpose can make anyone feel dejected and insignificant. Without an aim, it is harder to rationalize moving forward. Purpose is vital since it equips us with the strength to defeat trials and tribulations. A motivation could be a personal goal, partner, friend, or family member. Typically, finding purpose is your best bet at regaining your faith.

It can be intimidating when some people seem like they have already got their whole lives figured out. Others even find their purpose as a child in the shape of a dream. Usually, this ambition takes a different shape as the person matures. Someone who originally wanted to become a dancer might eventually change his mind and conclude that he would rather be a lawyer. Lucky ones get to stick to one single dream for their entire lives, but how about others who have not had the chance to set their ambitions straight?

Although these accomplished young adults can seem intimidating, never forget that people achieve things in life at varying turns. Social constructs may tell you when you should obtain a degree, get a job, or build a family. Nevertheless, these constructs do not take into account whatever unique circumstances you may be dealt with so these should not dictate the speed at which you make major decisions in life.

The first step to in finding meaning is to forget what society expects from you. Ask questions. In fact, ask a lot of questions. Ask yourself what you would be doing if you were unafraid or if you had all the resources you needed to do it. What would you be doing if life simply went your way?

To find answers, get away from your comfort zone. Taste new food, find a new hobby, and meet people. With new experiences, you can also learn new things about yourself. Perhaps you are an excellent cook, an exceptional photographer, or a wonderful painter. You would never know these things if you never try some of them out. You might even join a running club. Get to know veterans in their field and ask them how they feel about the choices that have led them to where they are now. Learn from the experiences of others and determine what lessons you can apply to yourself. The most helpful thing in realizing your goals is to rid yourself of any unnecessary pressure from society and understand that it is a different journey for everyone. A spectacular way to regain your excitement is to talk to people and learn from them. You would be surprised of the stories they have to tell.

Most essentially, be kind to the people around you. If you cannot change your life then maybe you can impact others positively instead. That alone should fill you with purpose and gratitude for everything you get to enjoy in life.
