A Concise Glance At The Ancient Ankh

In ancient times, the Egyptians used an exceptional symbol called the Egyptian Ankh. Among the list of various symbols of the Egyptian script or hieroglyphics, the Egyptian Ankh is well-known. Though it looks similar to the cross that depicts Christianity, a loop present above the top line makes it slightly different.

There are lots of theories and legends concerning the origin of the Egyptian Ankh symbol. Some suggest that it is the manifestation of sexual symbolism. Others suggest that it is a representation of an elaborate bow much in the same manner as the knot of Isis.

A deeper description of the Ankh can be had from the hieroglyphics of Egypt. They provide some interesting information about the lower half of the symbol. They show that the lower half of the Ankh symbol splits to make the bow's two ends.

The initial samples of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics really depict the Ankh as being separated from the ends. This is the reason why Egyptologists think that originally the symbol must have had some of religious significance in the form of a knot.

Historians involved in the study of Egyptian scripts are yet to draw a correct idea regarding the origin of the Ankh, but their analysis does not confound the learner. It is important to mention that the Egyptian Ankh is symbolic of life. That could be the reason behind many of the Egyptian deities' pictures with the Ankh held in their hands.

In Egyptian script, the Ankh appears as if it is presented on the king's lips symbolizing the 'breath of life'. A more detailed study of its meaning shows that it could signify the importance of water and air which are essential to preserve life.

Anthropomorphism is a remarkable part of Egyptian antiquities. A lot of pictures related to this aspect have been found in Egypt. One such picture shows a pharaoh in the background of the Egyptian Ankh in the form of a fan of ostrich feathers. Therefore such pictorial representations of the Ankh provide various meanings.

The Egyptian Ankh is represented in a peculiar manner wherein numerous symbols are made to form a chain. This picture of a chain of Ankhs is often found on water receptacles expressing the powerful nature of water. Objects used for libation during ritualistic activities also display the Ankh.

The significance of this unique symbol can be found in the truth that many different everyday use objects were purposely created in the form of the symbol. This included all kinds of items including those that were typically used in royal and religious ceremonies whereas on the other hand the common man would also have numerous items either made in the shape of the symbol or carrying a pattern or print of the symbol. The list of items that were often seen in the shape of the Ankh symbol included mirrors, sistrums, spoons and other crockery items.
