Answering The Question Will The Antichrist Be A Muslim?

By Essie Osborn

The Bible and the Koran offer an account of the rise of a ruler before judgment day. The coincidences have led Christians to ask the question will the antichrist be a Muslim? This is a puzzle that has kept theologians on both sides busy in an attempt to provide an answer. The conclusions made are personal and out of research and evaluation of available scripture.

Islam carries a story of a twelfth imam who disappeared at a young age and is expected to return before judgment falls on humanity. The story indicates that Muslims were being persecuted at the time. This led the imam to flee to the desert. He is expected to return in order to fulfill his mission of birth. This return before judgment coincides with rise of the beast. The similarity in the two occurrences leads people to make the conclusion.

Christians will witness the rise of the antichrist before Jesus returns to judge the world. This scenario is captured in Revelation chapter thirteen, verse four. The said ruler will make a promise to deliver peace to Israel for seven years. The promise will not be fulfilled. Instead, the ruler will be dictatorial and rule with anarchy. This becomes a sign of end times.

The broken promise to Israel becomes a signal for an ending world. Christians will witness a lot of dictatorship with the king demanding recognition as god. Other signs include trickery and intrigues. The king is said to rise at around the same time of the return of this imam. Reading the two scriptures side by side has lead Christians to make the conclusion of a Muslim antichrist.

Doubts about the relationship between Muslims and the antichrist emerge when one reads the book of Daniel. He introduces the return to reign of the Roman Empire. This kingdom is to be under a king ruling with intrigues, deceit and claiming equality with God. The mention of Roman Empire shifts focus away from Islam.

The location of the Roman Empire casts doubts over the antichrist coming from the Islamic world. The location of this empire is in Europe. This area has a small population of Muslims and would be unlikely to allow them to lead. Muslims are dominant in the Middle East. Their relationship with Israel would almost make it impossible to achieve the seven years of peace. This puts doubt on the proposal.

One would regard the Muslim connection as theory and a result of extrapolation of scripture. Such a ruler would require the acceptance of both Jews and Muslims. The most likely possibility would be a half cast. Such a person would be welcome by Muslims as their returning Imam and the Jews as one of their own. This would make it possible for him to rule.

The conclusion on the possibility of a Muslim antichrist arises out of double reading of the scripture. Christians are required to be vigilant when accepting any ruler. This ensures that they do not fall to the intrigues and deceit that will characterize the beast. Any leader must be required to proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord.
